Abstract

Mexico is the center of origin and diversity of the Agave genus with 223 species in the world. The state of Hidalgo is one of the five main producers, with an area of 4,482 hectares registered in 2021. The maguey pulquero, which belongs to the aforementioned genus genus, has a high water retention capacity, soil conservation properties, and is efficient in carbon capture and even in bioenergy processes. However, the plantation area has decreased in producing regions. Therefore, the aim of this study was to analyze the benefits of the maguey plant as a resilient crop and to develop a proposal for public policy for the state of Hidalgo, Mexico. To achieve this, six participatory forums were held with maguey producers and decision-makers in different municipalities of Hidalgo, and thematic roundtables were also held among specialists in the scientific and academic fields. One of the characteristics that the maguey plant presents is its ability to adapt to arid climates, due to its crassulacean acid metabolism. As a result of the forums and work roundtables a proposal for a public policy called "Law for the Protection, Conservation, Promotion and Use of the Agro-Food Chain of Maguey" was developed to promote plantations and consider the maguey plant as an agro-food chain, and also to contribute to mitigating climate change.
